The Department of Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences undertakes undergraduate programme that will lead to the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work.

BRIEF PROFILE OF HOD:

Mina Margaret Ogbanga is a distinguished social work scholar, researcher, and educator specializing in the macro and related social work. She holds postgraduate degrees from several prestigious institutions and has decades of experience as both a professional and practitioner in the field.

Her research focuses on social and cultural aspects of social work policies, reproductive health, rehabilitation, and recovery. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and books and has presented her work at global conferences. As a founding figure in social work education, she has contributed significantly to its establishment in several higher institutions.

As an educator, Dr. Ogbanga teaches undergraduates and graduate courses, employing an innovative and inclusive teaching style that emphasizes critical thinking, cultural competence, and empathy. She is also a licensed social worker with hands-on experience in community organizations, counselling and support services while developing programs for children, adolescents, and adults through her foundation. STRUCTURE OF THE UNIT

Structure of the Social Work Department at Rivers State University:

Department at RSU is structured to ensure effective teaching, research, and community service. The department is headed by a Head of Department (HoD) who is responsible for overseeing the department’s activities.

Head of Department (HoD):

  • The HoD is the chief executive of the department and is responsible for making strategic decisions.
  • The HoD is also responsible for coordinating the department’s teaching, research, and community service activities.

Academic Staff:

  • The academic staff are responsible for teaching courses, conducting research, and supervising students.
  • The academic staff are divided into different ranks, including Professor, Reader, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, and Assistant Lecturer.

 

 

Administrative Staff:

  • The administrative staff provide support services such as administration, finance, and human resources.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The philosophy of the Department of Social Work programme is to produce graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in the solution of social problems associated with poverty, displacement, mental or physical challenge and rehabilitation of sufferers and to make contribution to the development of Nigeria and the global community, drawing from varied experiences and knowledge in the field of social work as embedded in social sciences.

The objectives of the Department are, to:
