Institute Of Education

On the recommendation of Senate, the Governing Council of the Rivers State University of Science  and  Technology, at  its meeting on July 5, 1989, approved and establishment of the Institute of Education, with effect from October 1, 1989.

The Institute of Education is designed to serve the educational needs of Pre-service and In-service teachers within Rivers State and all other part of the country.

Structure of the Institute

 

The Institute of Education, semi-autonomous in nature, is organized into three broad units/areas as follows:

  1. Educational Services unit
  2. General Administration unit
  3. Research and Publication unit

Duties and Responsibilities of the Institute

  1. Organize academic programmes for students.
  2. Coordinate Research and Publication.
  3. Provides support system for the University.
  4. Collaborate with other Universities, secondary schools and other higher Institutions in developing their staff.

Philosophy of the Institute

To provide quality training for every level of education practitioner from the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of the Nigerian school system.

Educational Service Unit

Presently, Institute of Education runs the Sandwich Year. The unit co-ordinates two types of academic Programmes, Regular/Sandwich which includes: Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE/PGDTE) and Sandwich Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE/PGDTE) Postgraduate M.Ed/M.Sc and Ph.D Degrees and Undergraduate Degree programmes within the Institute.

General Administration Unit

This unit provides support services for the Director and other academic/professional staff of the Institute. The Institute’s Secretary is responsible for the day-to-day running of this Unit. The staff that provide support for the Director of the Institute of Education include: Assistant Registrar, (Institute Officer) Administrative staff, Higher Executive officer, Secretary, Driver as well as Cleaners.  

Research and Publication Unit

The activities of this Unit is co-ordinated by a Senior academic member of staff. Action research projects that may attract funds are encouraged and regular dissemination of research findings to relevant sectors of the educational system –primary, secondary and teacher training levels is one of its primary duties.

Objectives of Institute

  • To organize and run full-time and part-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes within the Institute.
  • To organize and conduct other outreach programmes workshops, seminars and conventions in collaboration with other bodies outside the Institute
  • To collaborate with National Teacher’s Institute; (NTI) Kaduna, in the conduct of grade II Teacher’s examination as specified in the new National Policy on Education
  • To assist the State Ministry of Education in matters relating to the curricula, examinations, training, retraining of teachers, supervision, award of teachers certificate and any other areas that might be deemed necessary.

  • Masters Degree in Education Management  (M.Ed, Mgt.)
  • Masters Degree in Science Education (M.Ed. Sc. Edu)
  • D Degree in Educational Management and Planning, Adult and Community Education, and Science Education
  • Sandwich B.Sc. Degree in Agricultural Education, Business Education, Adult and Community Education Science Education Vocational and Technical Education with options: Building Option Mechanical Option and Elelct/Elect Option.
