Rivers State University Business School

Introduction

Rivers State University Business School (RSUBS) was established on the 4th of October, 2021 to provide skilled manpower in management and innovative thinking. The aim is to offer creative business training essential for governance, leadership and productivity. The programmes offered are Postgraduate Diploma, Master of Business Administration, Executive Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Business Administration.

Global economic development indicates deployment of specialized manpower in the allocation and utilization of resources. RSUBS intends to achieve this niche through offering practical postgraduate programmes directed to the resolution of managerial needs of the global community in the oil and gas, energy, telecommunications, entertainment, transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, health, finance, security, merchandising, services and hospitality sectors as well as governance.

The programmes are therefore, enriched with a network of industry requirements from the perspectives of creativity and innovation for satisfying the demands of the society.

Rivers State University Business School

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To formulate policies relating to the running and management of the Rivers State University Business School.
  • To recommend for the approval of Senate programmes and courses to be run by the Business School and the duration of such courses and other charges.
  • To interact with, and relate with other Business Schools within and outside Nigeria for the purpose of enhancing relevance, efficiency and effectiveness of the Business School in meeting the contemporary needs and challenges of society.
  • To recommend the category of staff both within and outside the University to be engaged as lecturers and instructors in the Business School.
  • To determine and recommend to the Vice-Chancellor the fees and other charges payable by students under the various programmes and courses to be run by the Business School.
  • To recommend to the Vice-Chancellor the allowances, honorarium and other entitlements of staff and consultants to be involved in the running and operation of the School.
  • To carry out such other duties that are incidental to the aforesaid functions as may from time to time be directed by the Vice-Chancellor.

To submit a detailed annual report to the Vice-Chancellor for subsequent consideration by Management and Council.

Philosophy of the Business School

Postgraduate Diploma

The philosophy of the postgraduate programme is to provide remedial training in basic courses in Accountancy, Finance, Management, Marketing, Supply Chain and Logistics Management, Office and Information Management and Project Management to prepare graduates of Universities or equivalent qualifications or those who did not have first degrees in these areas to either pursue postgraduate degree programmes in these fields of study or prepare them for managerial positions in the industry.

 Master of Business Administration (MBA)/Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA)

The philosophy of the MBA/EMBA programmes is to develop highly skilled professional managers for the public, private and international organizations.

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

The philosophy of the DBA programme is to develop highly skilled professional managers for the public, private and international organizations at the highest level of administration

Objectives

  1. To meet the growing need for high quality post graduate and industry tailored training for corporate executives, public officials, senior managers, career professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders and aspiring leaders in private and public sector organizations in the core management sciences and related business disciplines
  2. To bridge the competency gap required to produce innovative, multi-tasking and flexible workforce for the dynamic work environment.
  3. To produce specialized manpower directed to the resolution of managerial needs of the global community in the oil and gas, energy, telecommunications, entertainment, transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, health, finance, security, merchandising, services and hospitality sectors.

Achievements

Relevant infrastructure for full take off of the School has been put in place. There is a functional website. Curricular for the programmes approved by the Senate – Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive Master of Business (EMBA) have been fully developed. Lectures will commence in June 2022.

Structure Of The Business School

The School is headed by a Director on the rank of a professor. He reports to a Management Committee through a Chairman who is a Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration).

The Director is assisted by other support staff on the ranks of Deputy Director, Deputy Registrar/Secretary to the School, Accountant, Confidential Secretary and ICT Staff.

Upcoming Events

A proposal for “certificate programme in University Administration and Personnel Management” has been submitted to the Vice Chancellor for consideration. If assented to, it will enhance capacity building and productivity in University administration in Nigeria.

Prospects

The School is located in a serene environment conducive for learning in an exquisitely furnished multipurpose edifice with modern classrooms, conference/seminar rooms, syndicate rooms, offices, spacious lounge and elaborate parking lot.

It has the potential of becoming the centre of excellence in high quality postgraduate and industry tailored training for corporate executives, public officials, senior managers, career professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders and aspiring leaders in private and public sector organizations in the core management science and related business disciplines.

Prof. Loveday Asonye Nwanyanwu (KSC)

Profile of the Director

Prof. Loveday Asonye Nwanyanwu (KSC) is a professor of Accountancy with specialisations in financial accounting and financial management; research interests are in the areas of financial accounting, financial management, auditing and investigation and taxation.

He lectures contemporary issues in accounting, contemporary issues in international accounting, accounting standards, public sector financial reporting standards, tax audit and investigation and tax management at the postgraduate levels.

Professor Nwanyanwu joined the services of the University on the 14th of October 1997 as lecturer II. Aside being Chairman of Senate, Vice Chancellor’s and Faculty Committees, he was Ag. Head and Coordinator, Centre for Continuing Education of the Department of Accountancy respectively.

Prior to advancement into academics, Prof. Nwanyanwu was Audit and Finance Managers respectively of Risonpalm Limited (a former World Bank assisted agricultural company). He is a consultant on accounting, financial reporting, tax, management and financial advisory services.

In respect of services to society, he was Secretary; Rivers State Eminent People’s Forum from 1998 – 2021.

He is a Fellow (FCA and FCTI) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) as well as Associate Member (AMNIM) of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM). He has published articles in refereed journals and has presented papers at conferences as well as chaired academic workshops
