
ABOUT THE FACULTY
The Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences (FBCS) commenced in 2018 as a pre-requisite for accreditation by the Medical and Dental council of Nigeria. It is currently located on the clinical campus of the Rivers State University at Hospital Road, Port Harcourt Township and in the Pathology block at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital for clinical laboratory exposures.
The FBCS delivers the first-year clinical training of medical students undertaken in the fourth year of the Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) program. It is an intermediary faculty between the Basic Medical and Clinical faculties, that deals with the basics (pathological and pharmacological) of disease processes and its applicability in clinical practice and research. It is also services other medical and allied health professional programs. The Part II MBBS programme is the major academic program of the FBCS for undergraduate medical students. It runs for a period of twelve (12) months, during which training will be carried out and culminate in the Part II MBBS professional examination. The faculty also hosts postgraduate programs including master’s and Ph.D courses offered by the departments.
Prof. Ibinabo Laura Oboro, the current Dean took over leadership of the faculty on the 14th day of February 2025. Former Deans include Prof. Orikomaba K. Obunge (2015-2018), Prof. Chituru G. Orluwene (2019-2020) and Prof. Kaladada I. Korubo (2020- 2025).
