Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic)

Senibo (Prof) Valentine Benjamin Omubo-Pepple was born on a lover’s day,14th  of  February, 1957 in Opobo town into the family of Late Ven B. Omubo-Pepple of the First African Church and late Madam Member Omubo-Pepple. He attended St. Michael’s State School, Rumuomasi where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate at Credit level in 1971. From 1972 to 1976, he attended Bonny National Grammar School (BNGS) Bonny and obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) in Div II. While in BNGS, because of his leadership quality and hardworking, he was appointed the Deputy Senior Prefect (DSP) for the 1975/76 session. From 1977 to 1981, he attended the then College of Science and Technology (CST), and later, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) and now Rivers State University (RSU) where he obtained the Higher National Diploma (HND), Merit level in Applied Physics. From 1981 to 1982 he enlisted in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and served in Iworo Ajido Secondary School in the Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State.

From 1977 to 1981, he attended the then College of Science and Technology (CST), and later, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) and now Rivers State University (RSU) where he obtained the Higher National Diploma (HND), Merit level in Applied Physics. From 1981 to 1982 he enlisted in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and served in Iworo Ajido Secondary School in the Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State. Precisely on the 20th of December 1982, he was employed as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Physics in the then Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt. In 1986, he obtained his Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) in Applied Physics. In 1989 he attended a workshop on Renewable Sources of Energy at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. From 1987 to 1989 he served as the Physics Departmental Examinations and Records Officer. From 1989 to 1991, because of his commitment to duty, he was appointed the Faculty of Science Examination/Record officer, a position he combined with that of his Department. In 1986, he was regraded to Assistant lecturer and was promoted to Lecturer II in 1989. In 1991, he joined the Technical Aid Corps (TAC) and was posted to the Republic of Namibia. While in Namibia, he was posted to the Rundu region and then deployed to teach Physical Science in Linus Shashipapo Secondary School. After the expiration of two years’ service under TAC, and because of his dedication to duty, he was offered contract service, from 1993 to 1997. Returning to Nigeria, he enrolled for his doctorate degree in Applied Physics which he obtained in 2006. He was promoted to Lecturer I in 2003 and then to Senior Lecturer in 2005. He has served the University in different capacities: member Assessment and Graduation Committee (A & GRC) 1989 to 1991, member and later, Chairman, Faculty of Science Environmental Committee, member, University Environmental Committee, member Departmental Examination Board and Post Graduate Board, member, representing Faculty of Science in IPS and IGST, member of Senate representing Faculty of Science, and Head of Department of Physics from 2013 to 2015.

He was promoted to the rank of Reader in 2010 and Professor of Solid-State Physics in 2014. He served as the Dean of Faculty of Science from November 2015 to January, 2020. He is presently the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic)

He is a member Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC). He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Physics (NIP), member, Physics Writers Series Creation (PWSC), member, Namibian Science Association (NSA). He has published over ninety (90) journal articles in both local and international journals.

Religiously, he was born into Anglican Communion family and has remained so.

He is happily married with four (4) children and has three grandchildren.

Socially, he loves playing draft, table tennis and football.

He is a disciplinarian to the core, a timer keeper and a lover of peace. In Faculty of Science, and under his tenure as the Dean, hawking, indecent dressing and trespassing in particular are strictly prohibited and offenders are punished depending on his mood at the material time.

He is modeled, designed and fabricated in Rivers State University, and marketed worldwide: indeed, a true son of Rivers State University.
