Honourable Justice Mary Ukaego Peter-Odili, JSC, (rtd) the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 14th Governing Council of the University was born into the family of the late HRH, Eze Bernard Sunday Chigbu and Ugoeze Bernadette Nwatuma Nzenwa (of Obizi, Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area Imo State) on 12th May, 1952.

Her early life saw her attending primary and secondary schools in her hometown Obizi, Umuahia and Lagos. She continued and concluded her secondary education at Mbaise Girls High School after the civil war. She then attended Queen of the Rosary College Onitsha for A levels in 1972 but discontinued when she gained admission to study Law at University of Nigeria and graduated in 1976 with Second Class (Upper Division). She won the prize of the best student in Commercial and Property Law. She attended the Nigerian Law School in 1976 and graduated with a Barrister at Law certificate in 1977. She did her national service in 1978.

Her Lordship commenced her legal career with her appointment as Magistrate Grade III and retired from the Supreme Court Bench on 12th May, 2022.
She has held several positions in the Judiciary such as:
a) Chairman Education Committee, National Judicial Institute (NJI)
b) Deputy Chairman, Board of Governors, NJI (2021 – 2022)
c) Deputy Chairman, National Judicial Council (2021 – 2022)
d) Chairman, NJC Interview Committee (2021 – 2022)

She is happily married to Dr. Peter Odili, CON, GSSRS, former Governor of Rivers State (1999 – 2007) and blessed with four (4) children and several grandchildren.
