Faculty of Engineering of Rivers State University was initially established as the School of Engineering, College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt. It became a full-fledged Faculty with the foundation of the University in 1980.

It had only five Departments at inception namely: Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering and Marine Engineering.

The Faculty currently has eight (8) Departments viz: Agricultural & Environmental Engineering, Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering. The Faculty runs undergraduate programs (B.Tech. Degree) and postgraduate programs: Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Masters (M.Tech.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in these Departments.

The Faculty also has a Center of Excellence in Marine and Offshore Engineering for postgraduate studies (Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Masters (M.Tech.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Marine Engineering (Power Plant), Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering.
