Medical Microbiology & Parasitology

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology is one of the five (5) departments in the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences of the College of Medical Sciences, Rivers State University. Medical Microbiology and Parasitology is a branch of medicine which deals with the study of microorganisms that are both beneficial and harmful to both human and animal,

majorly also it involves the study of various clinical applications of microbes for the improvement of health.

The course is offered to first year clinical students (400 level) of the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery) Program and 300 level Nursing students. Teaching involves demonstrating the microscopic appearance and relevance of microorganism in the pathogenesis of disease in humans. The students are taught to apply the knowledge of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology to identify various organisms as causative agents of infections as well as providing appropriate treatment, prevention and control of infectious diseases.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Play a leading role in infection prevention and control
  • Involvement in infectious disease outbreak management

  • Attend to patients as it relates to clinical consultations, laboratory investigations and treatment of infectious diseases at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

Our primary goal is to provide world-class training in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology to medical, nursing and allied students in a manner that encourages students to learn and apply the knowledge effectively.

OBJECTIVE

  • To train medical, nursing and allied students to the expected standard and with the best practices acceptable globally.
  • To assist the university in Infection Prevention and Control of infectious diseases.
  • To participate actively in all University committees by offering ideas and making positive contribution toward the continual growth of the University.
