Human Physiology

Dr. Tonye Korubo-Owiye

The Current Head of Department

Human Physiology

Physiology is one of the three foundation departments of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of the College of Medical Sciences, Rivers State University. The Rivers State University started in 1971 as the College of Science and Technology, later granted full university status in 1980.

Following the senate approval of a proposal for the establishment of a School of Medicine for the university in 2010, the Government of Rivers State finally gave its approval for the establishment of the College of Medical Sciences in the university in March 2015. This event necessitated the change in the name of the university to Rivers State University. This gave birth to the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of which the Department of Human Physiology is one of the founding departments.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The general philosophy of the undergraduate programme in Physiology is to produce graduates of high academic standing with sufficient practical exposure who can function adequately in the medical education process, complement ancillary laboratory medical services to the greater society and develop entrepreneurial expertise in related disciplines.

The philosophy of the postgraduate programme is to train and produce quality academics to enhance teaching, and engage in meaningful, productive research.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the undergraduate and graduate programmes in Human Physiology are:

  • Train Physiologists who are well oriented scientifically with requisite academic, technical and professional backgrounds to pursue research in the physiological sciences in health institutions locally and internationally.
  • Provide effective manpower in health institutions and other industries where the knowledge of Physiology can be applied.
  • Promote Physiology as a subject through research that will lead to the acquisition of higher qualifications such as MSc and PhD degrees.
  • Teach Physiology to Medical, Dental, Anatomy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Food Science and Home Management and those of other related disciplines.
  • Use basic laboratory equipment and procedures with confidence and accuracy.
