COMMUNICATION & MEDIA STUDIES

The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies was officially approved by the Senate of Rivers State University on March 31, 2022. Four (4) Departments make up the Faculty. They are:

  • Department of Cinematography and Broadcast Studies
  • Department of Development Communication Studies
  • Department of Public Relations and Advertising
  • Department of Journalism and Print Technology

The Faculty offers unique opportunity to students to study in the various Departments for the award of Bachelor of Science and higher degrees. The undergraduate programme of the Faculty is designed to provide fundamental knowledge and deepen the students’ understanding of the dynamics of communicating with a mass audience within different sections of the society. It also introduces them to the techniques and tools of research, develops in them the spirit of enquiry and prepares them to face the peculiar challenges of the society with a view to solving them. The students will also be properly positioned to utilize mediated and inter-personal communication in problem solving.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dean: Dean is the Chief Executive Officer of the Faculty. He superintends the affairs and general administration of the Faculty. The Dean supervises various Departments in the Faculty and chairs the Faculty Board and other statutory meetings.
  • Sub-Dean: Serves as Deputy to the Dean. Does such duties as may be delegated to him by the Dean from time-to-time.
  • Faculty Officer: Serves as the Secretary to the Faculty. He records the minutes of the Faculty Board Meetings and circulates information about the Faculty as directed by the Dean. He also carries out any other administrative duties as may be assigned to him by the Dean.
  • Faculty Accounts Officer: In charge of financial transaction of the Faculty. Does such duties as may be assigned by the Dean from time-to-time.
  • PG Coordinator: Responsible for the Coordination of the Faculty’s Postgraduate Programmes. Carries out such duties as may be assigned to him by the Dean.
  • HOD: Responsible for the day-to-day running of the Department in the Faculty. Carry out other duties as may be assigned by the Dean from time-to-time including examination and preparation of student’s results.
  • Faculty Exams Officer: Responsible for the record keeping of examination results of students In the Faculty. Carries out other duties as may be assigned to him by the Dean.
  • Faculty TimeTable Officer: Responsible for preparing lectures and examination time-table for the Faculty.
  • Faculty Part-Time/Weekend Programme Coordinator: Responsible for the coordination of the Faculty Part-Time/Weekend Programme. Carries out other duties as may be assigned to him by the Dean.
  • Faculty Quality Assurance Officer: Responsible in ensuring that Quality Assurance of works is maintained in the Faculty. Carries out other duties as may be assigned to him by the Dean.
  • Faculty Welfare Officer: Responsible for the coordination of welfare programmes in the Faculty. Carries out other duties as may be assigned to him by the Dean.
  • Faculty Maintenance Officer: Responsible for the technical maintenance of facilities in the Faculty. Carries out other duties as may be assigned by the Dean from time-to-time.
  • Faculty Students’ Staff Adviser: Responsible for the coordination of Student Union activities in the Faculty. Carries out other duties as may be assigned to him by the Dean.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The Faculty is poised to respond to the growing needs of a dynamic industry by designing, developing and sustaining a scholarly framework at enriching the intellectual, structural and ethical base of media practice within global parameters for excellence and creativity.

OBJECTIVE

  • Provide formal and cognate education with a view to equipping students with requisite skills for practice in the various media of communication.
  • Provide and engage in qualitative research in the field of communication with a view to enhancing effective production, management and dissemination of information for effective socio-economic and socio-political mobilization.
  • Provide complementary consultancy geared towards capacity building with a view to positioning the Nigerian Media Industry within the framework of global competitiveness.
