The Department runs a four-year programme leading to the award of B.Sc. (Hons.) in Sociology. It is aimed at being a reputable world class academic department that will impart sound scientific knowledge relevant to man to enable him understand the dynamics of the society and his role and functions in his society.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, organize, and deliver Sociology instructions in didactic, laboratory and/or classroom settings to promote student success within the University Community.

Support and promote the University and departmental missions centred on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and service.

Helpstudents in all dealings with the department and the University to be aware of University regulations as far as they affect the students.

Contribute to strengthening the visibility and impact of sociological practice beyond the university community.

Demonstrate commitment to making an impact on society, based on professional practice, research or knowledge transfer.

Undertake other activities, as required by the University.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The Philosophy underlying the Sociology degree programme is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge to make their contributions to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the Global community, having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in the fields of Social Sciences in general and in the various sub-fields of sociology in particular.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives are to:

  • Instil in students a sound knowledge of Sociology, an appreciation of its application in different socio-cultural contexts to involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying the workings of society.
  • Provide students with broad and well balanced knowledge of sociological theories and methods.
  • Cultivate in students the ability to apply their sociological Knowledge and skills to the understanding and solution of societal problems in Nigerian and elsewhere.
  • Provide students with relevant knowledge and skill base from which they can proceed to further studies in special areas of sociology or multi-disciplinary areas involving Sociology.
  • Develop in students the ability to apply the theories, principles, methods and skills in sociology to the understanding and solution of societal challenges.
  • Assist students appreciate the relevance and importance of Sociology in solving social problems.
