Department of Quantity Surveying

Dr. Alolote Ibim Amadi

Ag. Head of Department

Quantity Surveying

The academic programme in Quantity Surveying started in 1978, with the award of the HND Certificate at the time the University was a College of Science and Technology. In 1980 the College was up-graded to a University.

The HND programme was therefore phased out and replaced with a B. Tech. Degree in Quantity Surveying. The first set of B.Tech. students graduated in 1984.

Since then, there have been remarkable changes in the structure of the courses taking into  cognisance the various changes in practice and the future trends in the Construction Industry and more importantly the need to meet the minimum requirements of the programme as stipulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The undergraduate programme run by the Department is designed to provide the students with the fundamental knowledge and then deepen the students’ grasp of Quantity Surveying.   It also introduces them to the techniques and tools of research, develops in them the spirit of enquiry and generally prepares them to face challenges and solve problems in the field of Quantity Surveying.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The Quantity Surveying Programme is designed to produce graduates with a theoretical base and  practical skills that would equip them to effectively plan and control project funds with particular  reference to cost advice and management in the construction industry. The graduates will acquire specialised skills in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and green building. They will utilise entrepreneurial competencies sandwiched with procurement and  marketing strategies among others, in policy and decision making.

OBJECTIVE

The specific objectives of the programme are to inter alia:

         * Produce broad-based professionals with the necessary tools to collect data, analyse, model and

present cost information on construction and engineering infrastructure.

         * Provide adequate education and training to ensure the necessary background for the registration

of students, upon completion, with the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), the

Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN), the Institute of Construction

Industry Arbitrators of Nigeria and with other equivalent foreign professional bodies.

         * Produce skilled and broad-based Quantity Surveyors sufficiently equipped to fit into an evolving

advancement in building, civil, heavy engineering, petrochemical and manufacturing industries

ready to face a wide range of financial challenges.

         * Inculcate in the students, a culture of continuous research and professional development in all

aspects of construction and heavy engineering thus enabling graduates to make enlightened and

            informed contributions.

         * Produce high-level manpower for efficient and effective project delivery if terms of cost, time

            and quality.
