Introduction
The Department of Mathematics at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu – Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt was established in August 1980. In order to lay down a firm and stable foundation of our science and technology, the actual work of the Department is to train students in both Pure and Applied Mathematics. Over the years, it has metamorphosed to include Computer Science and Statistics and now bears the name Department of Mathematics/Computer Science. In 2002, due to its maturity in research and availability of manpower, the Department established Postgraduate programmes leading to:
i) P.G.D. in Computer Science
ii) P.G. D. in Statistics
iii) M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics
iv) M.Sc in Applied Statistics
v) Ph.D in Applied Mathematics
vi) Ph.D in Statistics
Philosophy
Mathematics/Computer Science engages the intellect strongly and so it is very useful to physical scientists and technologists. Recently the range of application has been extended to the social, biological sciences and the business community.
Objectives
The objectives of the programme are:
i. to instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for Mathematics/Computer Science and its applications in different areas of human endeavour
ii. to develop in students special mathematical/Computational skills for solving variety of theoretical and practical problems in that exists in nature
iii. to develop students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to specialized areas in Mathematics or Computer Science or multi-disciplinary areas involving mathematics and computation
