STRUCTURE OF THE UNIT

The Department is structured to run a 4 year programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Geology, having studied the following courses: Optical Mineralogy; Structural Geology; Geological Field Mapping; Mineralogy and Crystallography; Principles of Stratigraphy; Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography; Introduction to Geophysics and Mineral Exploration; Sedimentology; Petrology; Hydrogeology; Paleontology (Vertebrate and Invertebrate); Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing; Principles of Hydrology; Environmental Geology; Exploration Geophysics; Engineering Geology; Sequence  Stratigraphy; Regional Geology of Africa & Geology of Nigeria.

Plans are on ground to run M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in various areas of specialization.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

In agreement with the vision of the University, the philosophy of Geology program is to produce well-trained scientists with technically sound education. By their training, the products of the program are not only to acquire the basic knowledge of Geology but also to be equipped with geological techniques and skills required for exploration and exploitation of water, rocks and mineral resources that are necessary ingredients for national socio-economic development.

OBJECTIVE

A degree curriculum in Geology is developed to enable the students have a grasp of the basic principles of Geology. The objectives of the Geology programme therefore are as follows:

  • To develop academic ability, creative thinking, and power of imagination in our students and to motivate them to pursue research work in Geology and related disciplines such as Information Technology, Applied Geophysics, Geochemistry, Paleontology, Engineering Geology etc.
  • To develop in students the ability to apply their geological knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in Geology and the environment.
  • To develop in students through Geology education, a range of transferable skills of value in Geology and other areas.
  • To prepare students that will attract high level employment profile in the field of Applied Geology.
  • To provide students with knowledge and skills needed for further studies in Geology or multi-disciplinary areas involving Geology.
  • To prepare students for self-reliant work after graduation.
