Banking And Finance

The Department of Banking and Finance was established as a full-fledged Department in the Faculty of Management Sciences in 1990. The Department turned out its first batch of graduation in 1994 (1993-95 academic sessions). The initial programme(s) had hitherto been run under the Department of Business Administration from the 1982/83 academic session.

The Department runs programmes that lead to the award of Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Banking and Finance, Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Banking and Finance, Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Public Sector Financial Mangement, Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Banking and Finance, Master of Science in Public Sector Financial Management (MSc), Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Banking and Finance, Corporate Finance, Financial Markets, Quantitative Finance and recently introduced PGD and MSc in Public Sector Financial Management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of the unit are tied to why we award degrees to our graduands which are learning and character-building. Therefore, the primary duties and responsibilities of the unit are training of our graduands in deep, sound knowledge and skills in animal production geared towards making them solvers of the problem militating against increased animal production in the wider world. In doing this, the unit strictly follows the prescribed rules, regulations and procedures outlined by the University Management in achieving them. 

Furthermore, the unit is also responsible in instilling in our graduands discipline as to enable them to become models to others to emulate in terms of positive character developments, thereby making them good leaders for tomorrow. Some of the areas these character-moulding principles are imparted in graduands include but limited to:

  • Punctuality – coming early to class for lectures as to replicate it outside school environment.
  • Sincerity – that is, telling the truth at all times.
  • Avoid cheating – incuding during examinations.
  • Being respectful – to others
  • Being conscious – of things and comments they make, ensuring that you do not by your comments or acts destroy others. They may become your helpers tomorrow.

Therefore, in the overall, the unit ensures that we award our degrees due to learning and character.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The undergraduate programme run by the department is designed to provide the students with fundamental knowledge of the theory and practice of Banking and Finance, sufficient to enable them fit into the manpower needs of both the public and private sectors of the economy. The programme also introduces students to the techniques and tools of research, develops in them the spirit of enquiry and generally prepares them to face challenges and solve problems in the field of Banking and Finance.

OBJECTIVE

  • The provision of basic knowledge needed for an understanding and analysis of problems related to banking and finance in industry, commerce, public service and other human organizations.
  • The equipment of students of Banking and Finance with the skills needed for recognizing and defining problems and taking appropriate decisions, using scientific techniques and tools.
  • The inculcation in students an awareness of, and sensitivity to environmental factors, and conditions and their impact on Banking and Finance practice decisions.
  • The development of leadership and interpersonal relationship skills which one needs for working in organizations.
  • The student will be eligible to register and obtain exemptions from the foundation and intermediate stages of the examinations of professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and to suit for professional examination I and II to qualify as a chartered banker; the pervasiveness of the programme also makes the student to be eligible to fulfill the higher level requirement (stages) of other professional bodies particularly in the fields of accounting insurance, stock brokerage/capital market studies, treasury, management, investment/portfolio management.
