Agricultural Education

The Department of Agricultural Education, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt was carved out from the Department of Vocational and Technology Education in 2024. The former Department of Vocational and Technology Education originated from Department of Science and Technical Education in 2016. The latter was established in the year 1981 in the Faculty of Technical and Science Education turned out its first batch of graduates in 1985. The current Department of Agricultural Education trains students leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education. The programme is intended to prepare students to meet societal challenges with cost-effective solutions through research and development in the field of Vocational and Technology Education.

Dr. B.S. Nlebem is a Nigerian Reader in Agricultural Education, Administration and Rural Development at Rivers State University, Port Harcourt.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The programme philosophy is to develop sustainable human resource developers in Agricultural Education who are practical oriented, and who will teach with a sense of motivating the young ones towards broad-based agricultural development in Rivers State and Nigeria in general.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. produce educators to teach Agricultural subjects effectively at various school levels;
  2. develop instructors with teaching knowledge and vocational skills necessary for agricultural development;
  3. train teachers to conserve and permit more efficient use of untapped agricultural resources;
  4. train instructors to extend farming and family living skills to rural people;
  5. produce strong advocates and promoters of government agricultural project in other categories than teaching; and
  6. produce research-oriented teachers.
