Professor Israel Nsitelem Eme Worugji
Professor Israel Nsitelem Eme Worugji is a Nigerian of full blood, from Rumuakunde, Emohua, in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. Professor Israel Nsitelem Eme Worugji is a Professor of Law in the Department of Commercial and Industrial law, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt and a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He attended Baptist High School, Port Harcourt where he passed the West African School Certificate Examination with Division One (1) in 1975. His academic qualifications are Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business Studies (1979) Stockport College of Technology, Stockport, England; Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours degree in Law (1982) Manchester Metropolitan University (formerly Manchester Polytechnic) Manchester, England; Master of Laws (LLM) degree (1984) University of Essex, Colchester, England and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in African Law (2010) University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984 as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Prof Worugji began his academic career as a lecturer in 1988 in the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Calabar and became a Professor of Law at the University of Calabar in 2010. His areas of academic interest include Labour and Industrial Relations Law, International Human Rights Law and Women’s Rights Law; Criminal Law and Customary Law. He is widely academically published and his academic works are internationally visible.
He has served the University Community in several ways, including being the Dean of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Calabar; a member of the University of Calabar Governing Council; the National Legal Adviser of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the NUC Accreditation of Universities and the Universities’ Needs Assessment. He received the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers’ Long Service Award of Excellence in May 2016. He is a member of many academic and other professional bodies. He joined the Rivers State University in 2022.
