Political Science

Information gathering and keeping is a very salient aspect for the growth and survival of any organization in a society. The importance of a documentary evidence of people’s existence and activities is of great relevance for the survival of the human race and institutions around us.

The information on the Department of Political Science is coming at a time this important document is most needed by the University. For the records, it is to appreciate the invaluable contributions of the founding fathers, our present leaders and to be properly positioned to face the challenges of the future.

The history of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Political Science in particular, in Rivers State University is a compendium of activities, giant strides of the University leadership and the Government of Rivers State. The contributions of our founding fathers of this great institution cannot be allowed to go down the drain unappreciated. This work therefore, is a deliberate attempt by the leadership of the University to bring to light efforts of our past and present leaders that will serve as a spring board for the University to move forward to the next level.

 

PROFILE OF THE AG. HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Dr. Anthony Egobueze, holds a Ph.D. in Political Science (Government) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2013), an M.Sc. in Political and Administrative Studies from the University of Port Harcourt (2004), and a B.A. (Ed.) in Government from Abia State University (1994). He is an Associate Professor of Politics and Governance in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt.

Dr. Egobueze spent 19 years in the Rivers State House of Assembly, serving as Clerk-at-the-Table, Committee Clerk, Parliamentary Secretary to the Speaker (2015–2016), and Senior Special Assistant on Chamber Matters (2011–2015), contributing to over 30 high-impact laws.

He is Programme Manager/Secretary of the Port Harcourt Environmental Summit (PHES), Chairman of the International Power Roundtable (IPR) Steering Committee, and Executive Secretary of the Port Harcourt International Oil and Gas Conference (PHIOG). He is also a Fellow of ELLA, CIPDM, and a former Legislative Intern with MCID/NISER.

An accomplished scholar with several articles in good journals, he authored books like The Legislature in Conflict Management, The State and the People, Perspectives on African Politics, and  Requisites of Comparative Politics. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

One of the major duties of the Department is teaching, learning and research. It is the responsibility of the Department therefore,  to assist the management and leadership of the Rivers State University to achieve the desired goals of the university, Rivers State Government and the entire Nigerian State realize the goals of the National Policy on Education.

Vision

The vision of the Department is to excel in the study of Social Sciences, with a view to nurturing the courses offered through teaching and research undertaken in the search for truth and just world order.

Mission

The Mission of the Department is to effectively structure the courses in anticipation of the needs of the graduate, the government and the society at large; thereby enhancing the socio-economic and moral development of the country, and scientific research to advance knowledge in the individual student.

The staff strength of The Department of Political Science increased from 12 academic staff and 2 non academic in 2019/2020 to 14 academic and 2 non-acdemic staff in 2020/2021. The academic staff comprises Dr. E.O. Davies (Ag. Head of Department), Dr. O.Jason Osai, Mr Deinbo A. Briggs, Dr. C. Akujuru, Dr. A. Egobueze, Dr G. Nsiegbe Dr. E. Amadi,  Dr. L. Nwaoburu, , Dr. P. Ogele, Mr E. Owabie, Mr. U. Banigo, Miss O. Akhiojemi, Mrs I. Ojekwu and Mr.S. Didia. Mr. C. Amadi-Wike and Mrs Q. Worgu as non academic staff.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The programme provides an interdisciplinary global studies curriculum with strong components of cultural understanding, leadership, and communication competences.

The study of Political Science aims at building capacity and competences in contemporary international relations and practices.

OBJECTIVE

The specific objectives are as follows:

  • Graduates understand and are able to apply contemporary administrative and relational skills managing public and private institutions in Nigeria and elsewhere.
  • Graduates acquire capacity to operate successfully as administrators, journalist, and diplomats in multilateral organization and international firms.
  • To ginger the student’s intellectual ability through the programmes so as to be able to appreciate social problems.
  • To train students on the principles of political science and their application to the type of degree programme concerned – political economy, public administration, local government, conflict resolution and international relations.
