Professor Mina Margaret Ogbanga

​First Professor of Social Work and Environmental Sustainability

Head of Department, Social Work | Rivers State University

​Professor Mina Margaret Ogbanga is a trailblazing academic and practitioner, distinguished as the world’s first Professor of Social Work and Environmental Sustainability. Her career is defined by the “Triple Nexus”—the strategic intersection of Social Work, Environmental Sustainability, and Artificial Intelligence—positioning her as a leading global voice in reimagining social welfare for the 21st century.

​Currently serving as the Head of the Department of Social Work at Rivers State University, Professor Ogbanga has been instrumental in institutionalizing social work education across higher education landscapes, earning her the affectionate title, “Mama Social Work.” A woman of many firsts, Professor Ogbanga is an accomplished development activist, policy advocate, academic, and woman of God. Her landmark text on environmental sustainability established a new paradigm for “Ecosocial Work,” addressing how climate action and resource governance are inextricably linked to human dignity and social justice. Her vision is a world where peace, prosperity, and partnerships are accessible to all.

​Global Leadership & Policy Governance

​Beyond the lecture hall, Professor Ogbanga is a powerhouse in international development and extractive industry governance. Her executive leadership has spearheaded high-impact projects supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF-SGP), focusing on climate resilience and sustainable community development.

On ​Policy Advocacy:She is a registered member of the global EITI Members Association 2026 – 2029 as well as a prominent member of the NEITI (Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) CSO Strategy Group advocating for transparency and natural resource equity on the global stage.

Civic Empowerment: As a dedicated social worker, Professor Ogbanga drives civic engagement as the visionary behind Project V.O.I.C.E. (Voter Outreach Inspiring Civic Engagement), an initiative dedicated to fostering youth leadership and strengthening democratic participation.

​Academic Pedigree & International Fellowship

​She is a Lancaster UK SSETs Fellow and a Ford Foundation LTF Fellow amongst many others. Her academic pedigree includes Post Graduate and  executive training at various world-renowned institutions such as Cambridge University, Harvard University, and the ITC-ILO Turin. She currently serves as a Global Associate at the School of Social Work, IUPUI, Indianapolis, bridging the gap between African scholarship and international best practices.

​Research & Innovation

​With a prolific body of work and over 100 textbooks utilized by stakeholders globally—including a recent 40-chapter manuscript on the integration of AI in social systems—her research spans:

  • Ecosocial Resilience: Developing frameworks for communities to thrive amidst environmental shifts.
  • Extractive Industry Governance: Analyzing the social impacts of energy and mining on marginalized populations.
  • Digital Transformation: Exploring how technology can scale social interventions and enhance pedagogical innovation.

​Education & Advocacy

​An educator at heart, Professor Ogbanga is celebrated for an innovative teaching style that blends cultural competence with critical inquiry. She is a licensed social worker whose practical experience informs her roles as a consultant and rapporteur for international agencies. Through the envisioned African Institute of Ecosocial Resilience (AIER), she continues to mentor the next generation of scholars and practitioners, ensuring the future of social work is global, green, and technologically empowered.

Academic Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development: The department is responsible for developing and reviewing curricula to ensure they remain relevant and effective in preparing students for social work practice.

Research Responsibilities:

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME

Structure of the Social Work Department at Rivers State University:

Department at RSU is structured to ensure effective teaching, research, and community service. The department is headed by a Head of Department (HoD) who is responsible for overseeing the department’s activities.

Head of Department (HoD):

  • The HoD is the chief executive of the department and is responsible for making strategic decisions.
  • The HoD is also responsible for coordinating the department’s teaching, research, and community service activities.

Academic Staff:

  • The academic staff are responsible for teaching courses, conducting research, and supervising students.
  • The academic staff are divided into different ranks, including Professor, Reader, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, and Assistant Lecturer.

 

 

Administrative Staff:

  • The administrative staff provide support services such as administration, finance, and human resources.
  • The administrative staff are responsible for managing the department’s finances, maintaining records, and providing administrative support to the academic staff.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME

The philosophy of the Department of Social Work programme is to produce graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in the solution of social problems associated with poverty, displacement, mental or physical challenge and rehabilitation of sufferers and to make contribution to the development of Nigeria and the global community, drawing from varied experiences and knowledge in the field of social work as embedded in social sciences.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objectives of the Department are, to:

  • Prepare students for leadership roles in social work and related fields.
