MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Medical Biochemistry is one of the three foundation Departments of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of the College of Medical Sciences, Rivers state University.

In 2019, Medical Biochemistry Department was only servicing Human Anatomy and Human Physiology, but in course of time it became necessary for the department to have her own undergraduate students and broaden teaching services to include Medical, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences and those of other related disciplines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To train adequate manpower, to render services and teaching to the College and beyond and also perform Community Services and Research

STRUCTURE OF THE UNIT

The Department is in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences in the College of Medical Sciences.

The Department is headed by the Head of Department (HOD), who has a Secretary which is a higher Executive Officer alongside with teaching, non-teaching staff and junior staff.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The broad philosophy of a degree in Medical Biochemistry is to train Medical Biochemists who are well oriented scientifically with requisite sound academic and professional background to further research in Medical sciences and all health institutions locally and internationally and to train Medical doctors who will not only be versatile in clinical practice but will have basic Biochemical knowledge to all clinical problems so as to proffer adequate solutions to such problems, As well as provide effective manpower in health institutions and industries were the knowledge of Medical Biochemistry can be applied.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Train Medical Biochemists who are well oriented scientifically with requisite academic, technical and professional backgrounds to pursue research in Medical Biochemistry in health institutions locally and internationally. 
  • Promote Medical Biochemistry as a subject through research that will lead to the acquisition of higher qualifications such as MSc and PhD degrees.
  • Provide effective manpower in health institutions, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Forensic studies and industries where knowledge of Medical Biochemistry can be applied.
