DR. CHRISTIAN CHIKA OGBU (MBBs, FMCPath)

The Current Head of Department

Anatomical Pathology

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Anatomical Pathology is one of the Departments in the faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences of the College of Medical Sciences in the Rivers State University. Anatomical pathology is that branch of medicine which deals with the study of etiology, progression and changes that diseases impact on the body both at the cellular and the tissue levels.

The course is offered to first year clinical students (400level) of the MBBS (Bachelor of medicine surgery) program. We also offer a post graduate Ph.D programme in Surgical and Clinical Pathology.

The aim of the department is to demonstrate and impart to students and clinicians the ability to recognize Anatomical Pathology in the Structural, Biochemical and Functional Changes cells, tissues and organs that underlie disease.

COURSE PHILOSOPHY

The course emphasizes the principle of General Pathology, systematic, forensic and special aspects of Anatomical Pathology.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department is responsible for the training of medical students on the pathological basis of disease processes, teaching on etiology, pathogenesis, morphology, and clinical consequences of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. Students are thought on making diagnosis using cells, tissues using the microscope and whole organ examination at autopsy.

STRUCTURE OF THE UNIT

The Department is headed by a professor and currently consists of three Professional groups:
1. Academic staff:  1 Professor/Consultant Anatomical Pathologist, 2 lecturers II.
2. Technical Staffs: 5 Medical Laboratory Technologists.
3. Administrative Staff: 1 Admin officer.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

To enable students, appreciate the Principles of General Pathology, systemic, forensic, and special aspects of Anatomical Pathology. The application of these principles in the practices of medicine.

OBJECTIVE

At the end of the Anatomical pathology course the student should be able to apply the knowledge of Anatomical pathology in the structural, biochemical, and functional changes in cells, tissues, and organs that underlie disease.

Also, to understand the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, and morphologic changes that follow disease processes.

To better understand the proper interpretation of laboratory results by participating in the result generation process.

To also appreciate the importance of autopsy in medical practice.
