The Current Head of Department

Vocational and Technology Education

The Department of Vocational and Technology Education, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt was carved out from the erstwhile Department of Science and Technical Education in 2016.

 

The former Department of Science and Technical Education which was established in the year 1981 in the Faculty of Technical and Science Education now Faculty of Education, turned out her first batch of graduates in 1985. The Department of Vocational and Technology Education was pioneered by Professor P. C. Okwelle, who acted as the First Head of the Department from 2016-2018. Professor A.U. Nnodim took over as the acting Head of the Department from 2018-2019. From 2019, Professor N. S. Amadi became the acting Head of the Department till date. See the table below:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department of Vocational and Technology Education houses two academic programmes which include Agricultural Education Programme and Technical Education Programmes. These Programmes lead to the award of:

Undergraduate programmes (Regular) 

– B.Sc. in Agricultural Education

– B.Sc. in Technical Education ( with option in: Building Technology,                                   Electrical/Electronic Technology and Mechanical Technology.)

Undergraduate programmes (Part-time)

– B.Sc. in Agricultural Education

– B.Sc. in Technical Education( with option in: Building Technology,                                                 Electrical/Electronic Technology and Mechanical Technology.)

Postgraduate Programmes

– Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural  Education

– Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Education

 

 

 

– M.Sc. in Agricultural Education (with options in: Administration, Resources and Environment, and Community Development)

– M.Sc. in Technical Education (with Options in; Building Technology,  Electrical/Electronics, and Mechanical Technology)

-Ph.D. in Agricultural Education

The undergraduate programmes were designed to provide fundamental knowledge and to deepen the students’ grasp of Vocational and Technology Education. The programmes are intended to develop substantial skills in students, expose learners to the techniques and tools of research, develop in them the spirit of enquiry and generally prepare them to face challenges and solve problems in the field of Vocational and Technology Education in particular and Education in general. In addition, the Department currently runs Postgraduate Programmes (M.sc & Ph.D.) in both Agricultural Education and Technical Education Programme.

Administrative Procedure of the Department of Vocational and Technology Education

NOTE: The Head of Department oversees both academic and non-academic activities in the Department. The Head of Department reports to the Vice Chancellor through the Dean of the Faculty.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The Department of Vocational and Technology Education houses two academic programmes which include Agricultural Education programme and Technical Education programmes. These programmes lead to the award of

i. Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Agricultural Education and

ii. Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Technical Education with option in Building Technology, Electrical/Electronic Technology and Mechanical Technology

4i Agricultural Education Programme Philosophy 

The programme philosophy is to develop sustainable human resource developers in Agricultural Education who are practical oriented, and who will teach with a sense of motivating the young ones towards broad-based agricultural development in the state and Nigeria in general.

4ii Technical Education Programme Philosophy

The programme philosophy is to develop sustainable human resource developers in Technical Education who are practical oriented, and who will teach with a sense of motivating individuals towards broad-based technological development in Nigeria and globally.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the programme are to:

1. Produce teachers to teach Agricultural subjects effectively at   

     various school levels.

2. Produce the teaching knowledge and vocational skills necessary for     

    Agricultural Development.

3. Train teachers to conserve and permit more efficient use of      

     untapped agricultural resources.

4. Train teachers to extend farming and family living skills to rural    

     people.

5. Produce strong advocates and promoters of government   

    agricultural project in other categories than teaching.

6. Produce research-oriented teachers.

Objectives of Technical Education Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Produce teachers who will teach technical subjects effectively at various school levels.
  • Train individuals who will help in training skilled and semi-skilled craftsmen and technicians in an effort to meet the manpower needs of the society.
  • Train strong advocates and promoters of government technological programmes.
  • Produce technical teachers who will be willing to involve themselves in research and further studies in technical education and related fields.
  • Train individuals who will function in engineering enterprises in the private sector.
