Geography and Environmental Management

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management was established in August, 2018 as one of the foundation Departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Rivers State University with Prof P. N. Ede as the current and pioneer Head of Department.

Full academic activities commenced in November, 2018 with the enrolment of seventeen (17) students for the 2018/2019 academic session. As at 2020/21 session, the Department has expanded to 300 level of its undergraduate programme, including four (4) part-time students. BSc Geography and Environmental Management (fulltime and part-time) is the only programme on offer in the Department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of the Geography and Environmental Management Department are to teach and conduct research in all areas of geography where there is competence, facilities and interest.

STRUCTURE OF THE UNIT

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management is headed by a Head of Department who reports to the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences. All other staff of the Department report to the Head of Department on all matters emanating from the department after due consideration by the Departmental Board. The Departmental Board is the highest decision making body of the Department.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The philosophy of the Geography and Environmental Management degree programme is to instil in students a sound knowledge of Geography, its applications and to involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying the workings of the earth and environment as the home of mankind.

Produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge to make effective contributions to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in the field of Social Sciences in general and by extension the various sub-fields of Geography and Environmental Management.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives are to:

  • Produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge to make effective contributions to the development of Nigeria and the global community.

 

  • Provide students with broad and well balanced knowledge of geographical theories and methods.
  • Cultivate in students the ability to apply their geographical knowledge and skills to the understanding and proffer solutions to societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.
  • Provide students  with relevant  knowledge  and  skill  base  from which they can proceed to further studies in special areas of Geography or multi-disciplinary areas involving Geography
  • Instil in students an appreciation of the importance of Geography in spatial and environmental contexts.
  • Develop in students a range of useful competencies in public, private or self-employment.
